If you publish data and realize it needs to come back out, you can now undo the publish directly from Cube. The undo reverts the affected intersections to the values that existed just before the publish, without requiring a re-import or manual cleanup.
Undo Publish is available in the Spreadsheet App (Excel and Google Sheets), the Audit Trail page in your Workspace, and in Web Reports.
Before you start
A few rules control when you can undo a publish:
- You can only undo publishes that you made yourself. You cannot undo a teammate's publish.
- You need publish permissions to undo a publish. No separate permission is required.
- You cannot undo a publish to a scenario that has been write-protected after the publish was made.
- You cannot undo a publish if any of the data it wrote has since been changed. This includes a newer publish, an import, a formula recalculation, a scenario merge or duplication, or a dimension disable.
- You cannot undo the same publish twice.
When any of these conditions apply, the undo icon will either not appear or the unpublish will fail and you will receive an email explaining why.
Undo a publish from the Spreadsheet App
- Open the Cube sidebar in Excel or Google Sheets.
- Open the Mini Audit Trail from the sidebar toolbar.
- Find the publish you want to undo. Eligible publishes show a circular undo icon next to them. Hovering the icon shows "Undo your publish."
- Click the undo icon.
- You will see a blue informational toast titled "Unpublish Started" letting you know the unpublish is running in the background.
- Continue working in your spreadsheet. Cube will email you when the unpublish is complete.
- Once you receive the success email, fetch your range to see the reverted values.
Undo a publish from the Audit Trail
- In your Workspace, open the Audit Trail from the left navigation.
- Locate the publish you want to undo. Eligible publishes show a circular undo icon in the rightmost column next to View Changes.
- Click the undo icon.
- A toast will confirm the unpublish has started.
- Cube will email you when the unpublish is complete.
- A new "Data revert" row will appear in the Audit Trail once the revert finishes. You can click View Changes on that row to see what was reverted.
Undo a publish from a Web Report
In Web Reports, the undo icon appears in the report toolbar next to the Publish button. It is only available for the most recent publish you made from that specific report.
- Open the Web Report you published from.
- If your most recent publish from this report is eligible to be undone, an undo icon will appear in the toolbar next to the Publish button.
- Click the undo icon.
- A toast will confirm the unpublish has started.
- Cube will email you when the unpublish is complete.
- Fetch the report to see the reverted values.
What happens after an undo
Undo Publish is processed as a background task. This means the revert does not happen instantly, but you can keep working while Cube processes it.
When the unpublish finishes, Cube sends you one of two emails:
Success email: Subject line "Your data unpublish was successful." The body includes the time of the unpublish, a link to the matching Audit Log entry, and the number of values changed.
Failure email: Subject line "Your data unpublish was not successful." The body includes the time of the attempt and the reason it failed. The most common reason is: "Publish can't be un-published because the data has been updated by a more recent publish or import."
The reverted data does not automatically refresh in your spreadsheet or report. Fetch your range or report to see the updated values. If you have notifications enabled, you can also open the updated data directly from the notification prompt.
How the revert appears in the Audit Trail
When an undo completes successfully, Cube writes a new "Data revert" event to the Audit Trail. The original publish row remains in the trail unchanged. This preserves the full history of what happened and when.
Click View Changes on the Data revert row to see which intersections were reverted and what values they returned to.
Frequently asked questions
Can I undo a revert? No. A Data revert event cannot itself be undone. If you need to restore the reverted values, publish them again from your spreadsheet or report.
Can an admin undo another user's publish? Not today. Undo Publish only works for publishes you made yourself.
Does undo work with Cube Decks or the MCP Server? Not today. Undo Publish is available in the Spreadsheet App, the Audit Trail, and Web Reports.
What if the publish I want to undo is very old? There is no time limit on how far back you can go. As long as the data from that publish has not been changed by a more recent publish, import, formula recalculation, scenario merge, duplication, or dimension disable, the publish is eligible for undo.
Can I undo multiple publishes at once? Not today. You undo one publish at a time.
What if I click the undo icon while the original publish is still in progress? You will receive a failure email letting you know the revert could not be completed because the original publish is still in progress. Wait for the publish to finish and try again.
